Zyx is Growing Up

Yes, young Zyx Flux is getting older. She’s 14 years old now (about 2x her SL age) and like all young women she is starting to mature. Every child avatar I’ve met in Second Life has kept their age fixed over the years. My friend Marianne McCann is 8 1/2 years old. Her brother Pygar is 12 years old, and her sister Robin is 10 years old. They’ve not aged since I met them.

Zyx hasn’t always been a child avatar. Back when she was a gardener at the Isle of Lesbos her age was in NeverNever years … like 100 of ours, but young for there. I never got it all worked out. Pretty much she was a gardener … my landscaping storage alt. When Lesbos faded off into the sunset, I got to working on her back story, like why she has a sister/cousin/Aunt with what we perceive to be the same name. It wasn’t long before I decided she would age. When she was nearly 13, she shed her light blue coloring that all pixies are born with and turned a medium brown, showing she was probably going to be a Seelie Court Fae (the other Zyx is an Unseelie Court Fae) as her hormones changed. Her biology is a big twist on the traditional view of the Faerie Courts, but that’s not unusual for me. She was born with antennae, for example. This is Second Life. I can do what I want.

She had these cute little freebie antenna from Epic but “big” Zyx had more substantial, less cute antennae. As you can see from the picture above, “little” Zyx is growing a similar pair as she gets older. And her nails have turned into sharp claws. Not sure yet about making her taller. Maybe tweak her a few inches her and there, but that will probably happen. Now that she’s 14 though, I’m more comfortable with letting her wear clothes like you see above.

It is all part of a plan, or more likely, a plan in progress. But my little girl is growing up, to be sure.

Her story so far ….

Zyx Flux was sent out of the NeverNever to explore life with humans, her sister/cousin/Aunt coming along to keep an eye on her. She got a job with the Bay City Institute for Anomalous Research as a gardener and despite her youth, worked up to Chief Gardener at the Institute’s Arboretum of Rather Atypical Vegetation (SLurl). She keeps busy with learning new magicks, working, exploring our realm, and fighting a crush on Pygar (not good to fall in love with humans, she’s always being told).

Space Pixy!

Having called off from work today I thought I’d indulge myself with some Second Life time. When I went to log in, however, I saw that Zyx was … Well, take a look.

“Oh. Right.”

It seems that Bay City has a Moon base. This is news to me and I wonder if it is related to the Linden Department of Public Works (LDPW) efforts to repurpose alien technology or a previously secret Moon base (see here). Click any image above to see it on Flickr.

All in fun, of course. Thanks for letting Zyx visit, Marianne!

All The Girls

All the Girls
Zyx, Zyx, and me, all gathered for a quick portrait. This could raise a number of questions and frankly, I don’t have all the answers. But let’s try.

You and Zyx are both blue, so are you related?

No. We are not related. Zyx and Zyx are sisters, and Zyx calls me “Auntie” sometimes, but we are not related.

Um.. Zyx and Zyx?

Yes. You may seem confused as I was at first, but they have different names, really. It’s just that humans can’t seem to tell the difference in print or in speech. By the way, everyone in the family “seems” to have the same name, “Zyx.”

Zyx Flux has a surname. What’s up with that?

She’s from the Nevernever, like Zyx, but she has some mixed heritage. Like I said, I don’t know all the answers. She was born a very light blue but turned brown when she neared her teens (or what humans would call the teen years). Both girls turn a deep blue/black under certain circumstances and sometimes the young lady turns a purplish blue. It’s all related to hormones, I guess. Until she is of age, her older sister is her guardian in Nevernever and in Our World while she works at the Bay City Arboretum and the Bay City Conservatory as part of her schooling.

What’s the Nevernever?

The mystical world that lives in conjunction with ours. It is where the Fae live. Look it up sometime.

Could you remind me why you are blue?

Sure. I just am. Through my years in Second Life I have been many colors but usually blue or caucasian. I finally found a really nice blue skin that works with all my mesh body parts.

This picture really shows your photo retouching skills, doesn’t it?

I’m glad you like it. It wasn’t easy, but I found a way to log in all three avatars without totally crashing. Modified Default Windlight, most of the graphics candy, and Autocontrast set in the Snapshot tool. No retouching. Click the image or here to see embiggened in Flickr.

Did I say I liked it?

No, you didn’t.

Wee Zyx the Mouse Guardian (read about Mouse Guardians here ). Sarawak (SLurl) is such a lovely place, its pastoral splendor perfect for pixies like Zyx. The pose certainly matched my* mood at the the time. I sat in that spot for a couple hours just breathing and listening to the sounds of nature. Just what I needed.

*What? You didn’t know that Zyx Flux is my alt?

Zyx Loves the Arboretum

Zyx Flux, the Chief Gardener at the Bay City Arboretum of Rather Atypical Vegetation (SLurl), explores a lot on her days off but it isn’t unusual to find her hanging out at work anyway. That she lives in the barn behind the main building might explain it.

She tells me that she’s very happy with the current exhibits, recently refreshed in a fit of activity that involved lots of blood, sweat, and dirt.
